With an estimated budget of €429 million, The Count of Monte Cristo is the most expensive French film of 2024
Narrative
After escaping from the island prison where he spent 14 years for being wrongly accused of high treason, Edmond Dantès returns as the Count of Monte Cristo to take revenge on the men who betrayed him. When Albert watches Hydee singing and playing the guitar, it is clear that half the time he does not even touch the strings.
It appears in La grande semaine: episode no
1.13 (2024). The first question I would like to ask directors adapting novels into films is: if this book inspired you so much that you wanted to make a film based on it, why did you change its story?
So, again, if you didn’t like it, why make a movie about it?
The Count of Monte Cristo is another such case: those who have read the book will be amazed at how completely the ending has been distorted; and for no apparent reason I would have given up, because the ending of the book was dramatic enough. If you want to go off on your own terms, go ahead, use your imagination, and in this case, the sky’s the limit.
OK, end of story
If I were to disconnect my literary memory and judge the film on its pure cinematographic merits, The Count of Montecristo is a fair cloak-and-dagger film, with good performances from all the key actors, good cinematography, and decent pacing. But then again, my literary memory kicks in again and leaves a bittersweet aftertaste in my mouth…
